Shares of the pharmaceutical giant, Merck, plunged 10% today on news that the FDA has rejected the company’s new cholesterol drug, Cordaptive.
The company’s stock has been battered in recent months, dropping about 36% since December.
The Cordaptive snub has deepened Merck’s recent decline but, this is no death sentence.

Recession watch: Are we there yet?

CNN recently found that 74% of Americans think the economy is in a recession.  But, according to the technical definition of a recession, this is impossible.  How can this be???
One widely accepted definition of a recession includes the observation of two quarters of declining growth (as measured by GDP).   But, when it comes to a word […]

Kerkorian bid sends Ford shares up 10%

Kirk Kerkorian, billionaire investor extraordinaire, has offered to purchase 20 million shares of Ford Motor Co.
Is it me or does this guy have a potentially unhealthy obsession with American automobile manufacturers?   ;)
The proposed transaction will give the investor his long desired 5% stake in the firm.
Needless to say, Kerkorian’s offer gave the stock a much needed boost!  Shares are […]

Microsoft announced today that their first quarter revenues were pretty flat and profits fell.  Definitely not a good look!  The company’s very public and controversial courting of Yahoo certainly isn’t helping the situation.  Hmmm… “courting” implies consent and this is anything BUT consensual!

Is the Bull Market Back?

That’s what some economists are saying…
The Dow Theory is signaling that the primary trend of the market which has been down for months is pointing up again. The Dow Theory turns bullish when the DJIA and DJTA move together.
“The message,” says Richard Moroney, editor of Dow Theory Forecasts newsletter, “is stocks are headed higher. […]

Markets React Favorably to Earnings Reports

Investors ended the week upbeat after learning that earnings are meeting or beating expectations on the Street.
Citigroup reported huge losses as expected - but the losses totaled $5.1 billion only half of the $10 billion reported the preceding quarter.
Google also helped swing moods by reporting earnings and revenue in excess of predictions.
What did […]

Everyone is really nervous right now about the stock market. And Baby Boomers are particularly nervous, because they have a lot of money in the market and they are concerned about losing their retirement funds at a point where they won’t be able to generate income to replace it. And we all know […]
