TST’s first Fundamental Friday will analyze Dell Computer.
I am particularly fond of Dell, as its stock financed a portion of my college education. :) Many years ago, my mother stumbled upon Dell Computer when it was trading around $3. Between 1992 and 1999, Dell shot up and issued seven stock splits. Dell’s post internet bubble performance has […]

This is the third time I have written about Exxon Mobil breaking the record for the largest profit ever reported by a U.S. corporation and I’ve only been blogging since April!
This time Exxon Mobil reported net income of $14.83 billion for the third quarter of 2008. The new record reflects a 58 percent increase in profits over the same […]

The FOMC did just what investors predicted by cutting the target rate another 50 basis points.
The FOMC’s statement included the expectation for inflation to moderate in coming months, noting that the government’s recent actions have improved credit conditions, but “intensification of financial market turmoil” is likely to exert additional spending restraint as downside risks to growth remain. No word […]

The Dow jumped 889 points today, the second largest increase ever…and I don’t want to sound like the soothsayer, but beware the 900 point pop.
I know the market has been hammered and I know that many are factoring in an expected 50 basis point cut tomorrow from the Fed, but this makes no sense. The Dow’s gain doubled during […]

Yesterday, I asked the question, “When will banks start lending?” Today, the White House issued it’s desired answer: NOW!
White House press secretary Dana Perino had this to say: “What we’re trying to do is get banks to do what they are supposed to do, which is support the system that we have in America. And […]

The Treasury’s Troubled Asset Relief Program was approved a few weeks back, but the spending is just getting under way. Now that the government is starting to invest when will the banks begin to lend?
There are many motivations behind (or should I say underneath) TARP, but unfreezing the credit markets is at the top of the priority list. PNC […]

Sometimes while researching stocks, I come across tickers that are actually words.
TIER - Tier Technologies, FUN - Cedar Fair, PZZA - Papa John’s, WOOF - VCA Antech just to name a few.
This morning I came across SOLD. Pretty interesting. After all, what word could more perfectly describe what’s going on in worldwide stock markets right now?
During this […]

Recession fears are sending everything down and it may be tempting to liquidate your stock positions. Please reconsider!
People often forget that there are TWO ways to make money by going long on stocks: capital appreciation (the stock price rises) and dividends (when the company shares earnings).
Even if prices are dropping the dividends may not be. Search […]

Congress had a heavyweight line-up of testimony today as the House heard from Alan Greenspan and the Senate heard from Neel Kashkari, the bailout’s interim pay master (his official title is Interim Assistant Secretary for Financial Stability).
Greenspan’s prepared statement spoke of his feeling of ”shocked disbelief” regarding the country’s financial crisis. Interestingly enough, many people blame him for helping the economy get there.
Here are some interesting […]

Everytime I turn on the television, someone is talking about the stock market. Granted, I do watch an abnormal amount of CNBC, but even the regular stations are becoming saturated with financial market lingo.
I watched about a half hour of Saturday Night Live this past weekend and there were two MacGruber skits making references to the stock market’s […]
