9/11, a day I will never forget

by profsilver on September 11th, 2008

Like many Americans, I can remember where I was, what I was doing and how I felt on September 11, 2001.  In my apartment on the University of Delaware’s campus, lounging before work when the phone rang and would not stop ringing.  My sister called me and told me to turn on the TV.  Grief and total shock, disbelief.

For those who lost their lives, may they rest in peace.  For those still here, I wish you peace.

Speaking of peace…any of my friends can vouch for this, but wherever we go if anyone has a camera I make everyone pose for one picture holding up the peace sign.  Instead of “say cheese” I tell everyone to say “world peace.” I don’t know when or why I started the tradition and I know it gets on their nerves sometimes.  Others might think its corny, but the idea of peace everywhere is a beautiful thing that always brings a smile to my face.

It’s true about Tisa and the peace sign. When the tragedy of 9/11 began I was at work in Wilmington and our tax accountant came out of his office and told me that his wife called to inform him of the first hit. I thought he was joking, but of course he wasn’t. I called my mother to tell her to turn on the TV, and she saw the second hit, live. It was tragic. It was so overwhelming that most of us were speechless. What do you say when something like that happens? The declared a state of emergency, closed the schools and sent us all home. I raced home to get my son and was relieved that he was safe. Everyone who never made it out of those towers has a mother or a father or a son or a daughter or a brother or a sister or someone out there who is dealing with that loss. I can only imagine what they go through every year on this day.

World Peace seems like such a far off wish when you look at what’s happening in the Middle East, Africa and Georgia. I for one am definitely down for throwing up the peace sign and saying, “world peace”.

Feed the faith, starve the fear…
