Thursday night I watched Larry King and was saddened to see one of Hollywood’s friendliest faces lamenting over the pending loss of his home.
Ed McMahon, famed Johnny Carson sidekick, Star Search host and Publishers Clearing House bearer of good news, is over $640,000 in arrears on his Hollywood home.
Countrywide has initiated foreclosure proceedings against Mr. McMahon, whose […]

Surprise, surprise: oil prices have set another record high today.
The impact of oil’s resurgance is felt everywhere, as all three major indexes are trading sharply lower. The Dow has shed over 340 points on news of oil prices rising nine percent today, breaking $139 a barrel.
Did any fundamental change(s) occur in the world of oil supply and demand yesterday? Today? […]

One of the nation’s largest investment banks has taken major steps to silence rumors of an impending Bear Stearns-esque collapse.
Lehman Brothers Holdings firmed up its balance sheet by cutting its risky debt positions by 25 percent. In addition to selling off debt, the firm raised $8 billion in capital.
Many investment banks are fleeing from risky, mortgage related […]

In August 2003, I went on a graduation trip to the Dominican Republic. I was enjoying a carefree summer, living off of graduation gifts and looking forward to a new job in September.
When I arrived at the hotel in Puerta Plata, the first thing I saw at the front desk was a sign that said 1 […]

In 2005, the State of Pennsylvania made $9.5 million of revenue from $2.3 million in skipped tolls! I wonder what the figure looks like for toll-skippers so far this year.
My work commute is less than 15 miles round-trip and I only have to go in three times a week. So in theory, the tolls and soaring gas […]

Last week I gave my students some tips on work and life after college. One tip was to use spell check and grammar check before sending out e-mails. One tip that I left off this year was “don’t send anything via company e-mail that you wish to remain private.”
In today’s world of chain messages, carbon copies […]

The Fed stated that it expects the economy to shrink during the first half of 2008.
This announcement should come as no surprise, as in recent months the Fed has actively moved to stave off a recession. Even though the Fed has been reluctant to admit the severity of economy’s struggles, actions speak louder than words.
The minutes of their most […]

Everyday some “economic indicator” or report is released and the financial markets respond with yea, nay or who cares. Today markets responded somewhat positively to news that leading indicators show the economy has slowed growth, but has yet to begin shrinking.
The Conference Board announced that the Leading Indicators show a sluggish, but growing economy. No surprise there, but what are […]

The people have spoken! With 69% of the vote, the U.S. government officially gets the gas face!!!!
The government has encouraged “big oil” in so many ways. Some interesting tidbits include…
Failing to adequately support alternative energy sources with much needed funding. According to Joseph Romm, former Director of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, “the budget […]

Have you ever received one of those “boycott the gas station” e-mails? In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, gas prices shot up and I got my first e-mail with the subject line “FW: Don’t get gas from ExxonMobil.” Soon after, I received “Don’t buy gasoline on 9/1/05.”
I was irritated by the high prices but, unfortunately neither […]
