Cuban Defends Sale of Mamma, Blames The PIPE

Mark Cuban fired back at the SEC, defending the sale of stock which has him facing charges of insider trading.
Initial reports said the charges stemmed from his involvement in the IPO of a search engine called Mamma.com, but the sale in question was actually from a private investment in a public entity, also known as a PIPE.
What is a PIPE?  […]

The Most Important Question You Need To Ask Your Broker

Have you ever paid for something and wondered why?
Most of the time this happens to me in restaurants.  I order something that is supposed to be served hot and it comes out cold or I order something that is supposed to zesty and it comes out bland.  In cases like this, I could send it back for another one, […]

9/11, a day I will never forget

Like many Americans, I can remember where I was, what I was doing and how I felt on September 11, 2001.  In my apartment on the University of Delaware’s campus, lounging before work when the phone rang and would not stop ringing.  My sister called me and told me to turn on the TV.  Grief and […]

Donald Trump to the rescue!

Hot on the heels of July’s alarming increase in foreclosure filings, Donald Trump has stepped in to save one homeowner from losing his residence.
Ed McMahon, known as Johnny Carson’s sidekick, will now have Donald Trump for a landlord.  Trump has agreed to buy the home and lease it to Mr. McMahon, who defaulted on his $4.8 million mortgage with Countrywide.
In […]

Making light of a heavy burden: Jokes about gas :)

No one I know is laughing about high gas prices, but several people are making light of the pain we all experience at the pump.  Here are a few jokes I have come across:
A woman told her boyfriend, “I want you to take me out, somewhere really expensive for a change.”  The man thought for a minute and […]

The riskiest stock I could find…

If risk and return are directly related then the riskiest stock should provide the highest return, right?
Sounds good in theory, but what about practice?  I was curious to find the riskiest stock and see how it has faired this year.  I ran a stock screen that selected stocks on the basis of systematic risk as measured by beta.
Beta is […]

Travel plans? Plan ahead for the weak dollar

In August 2003, I went on a graduation trip to the Dominican Republic.  I was enjoying a carefree summer, living off of graduation gifts and looking forward to a new job in September.
When I arrived at the hotel in Puerta Plata, the first thing I saw at the front desk was a sign that said 1 […]

Fun Friday: Toll-hopping on the weekends

In 2005, the State of Pennsylvania made $9.5 million of revenue from $2.3 million in skipped tolls!  I wonder what the figure looks like for toll-skippers so far this year.
My work commute is less than 15 miles round-trip and I only have to go in three times a week.  So in theory, the tolls and soaring gas […]

AOL Execs face fraud charges

Today I was perusing through the legal scene for fraud and came across a few high profile cases.
The SEC has charged 8 AOL executives with civil fraud.  Apparently, they fraudulently inflated ad sales by $1 billion over a three year period.  Four have agreed to settle out of court.  Of those who elected to settle, the harshest penalty: […]
