New Hybrid System Announced by GM
Expect to see General Motors Corp (GM) releasing its first lithium-ion battery powered hybrid engine system to the market by 2010.
This new lithium-ion battery will deliver an impressive three times the power of GM’s current nickel metal hydride batteries.
Lithium-ion technology as it is called has been at the top of research teams priority lists recently as numerous automakers race to be the first to release the technology. For electric motors this technology is critical to mass production and will be the core in all next generation electric cars.
Currently lithium-ion batteries are familiar in consumer products such as laptop computers. The batteries are lighter then their predecessors, but come at a cost of a higher risk of overheating.
GM expects a 15 - 20% fuel economy increase with the use of these batteries.

The risk of overheating makes me a little nervous, but aside from that this sounds pretty exciting! Looking forward to seeing how it develops.
