Dow Breaks 8,000, Is This The Bottom?

Today the Dow lost 427 points and closed below 8,000. Perhaps that is exactly where it should be.
Back on 10/28, the Dow closed at 9,065.12 after rising 889 points during an extremely volatile session.  Traders were jumping for joy while I played the pessimist telling everyone to beware of the 900 point pop.  Prior to the […]

Beware of the 900 Point Pop

The Dow jumped 889 points today, the second largest increase ever…and I don’t want to sound like the soothsayer, but beware the 900 point pop.
I know the market has been hammered and I know that many are factoring in an expected 50 basis point cut tomorrow from the Fed, but this makes no sense.  The Dow’s gain doubled during […]

Look to bonds for signs of a turnaround

Everytime I turn on the television, someone is talking about the stock market.  Granted, I do watch an abnormal amount of CNBC, but even the regular stations are becoming saturated with financial market lingo.
I watched about a half hour of Saturday Night Live this past weekend and there were two MacGruber skits making references to the stock market’s […]

Beige Book punishes markets

The Fed’s latest Beige Book reads like a tragedy.
The book is published eight times each year and summarizes economic conditions in each Federal Reserve District (there are twelve).  The Beige Book contains a ton of data.  In a nutshell, economic activity weakened across all Districts.  Below, I have summarized the results from several components.
Consumer Spending and Tourism: Weakened […]

Spiders and Cubes are on the move

Today was another wide ranging day for U.S. market indexes.  Nasdaq was the hardest hit, losing 3.5 percent while the Dow lost 0.82 percent and the S&P lost 0.53 percent.
Today was relatively calm, so in my search for all of the action I decided to take a look at the top five most active issues: SPY, QQQQ, XLF, […]

Red October

The most terrible days on the market are referred to as Black Monday and Black Thursday.  In accounting and finance, “in the black” is a good thing.  So, for me this label is a bit counterintuitive.  After all, the biggest shopping day of the year is called Black Friday because huge sales on this day push many retailers from the […]

The hunt for J.Lo on Wall Street

Did anyone see Jennifer Lopez at the NYSE today?  I know a lot of people who were looking for her!
J.Lo is actually a Wall Street term for what looks like a rounding bottom in a pattern of stock prices.  The pattern suggests a shift from bearish to bullish.  Unfortunately, there were no signs of J.Lo at the NYSE, or […]

Happy Anniversary

Today marks the one year anniversary of the all-time high for Dow Jones Industrial Average.  The past year has seen plenty of ups and plenty more downs.  The Dow closed today at 8,579.19 which is about 39 percent off of its closing value of 14,164.50 on October 9, 2007.
Today’s decline was the largest decline since October 1987.  People are afraid to […]

Lucky No. 7

Yesterday the Dow lost 777 points, the House of Representatives rejected the $700 billion bailout package and the S&P lost $700 billion of its value.
Sounds like “unlucky” number 7, right?
Yesterday’s sell-off was an overreaction and yesterday I mentioned this would be a good opportunity to buy some undervalued stocks.  Well, the bargain-hunters just couldn’t resist, the Dow, Nasdaq […]

Dow loses 340+ points on employment data

The Dow lost 344 points today on news of discouraging employment data.
The stats surfaced just one day ahead of the August employment report which will be released tomorrow.
Some tidbits of today’s news include:
New jobless claims rose by 15,000 last week after three straight weeks of declines.
Private sector employment decreased by 33,000 in August.
On a positive note, the […]
